Intel Macs: hold
Option ⌥at power-on to choose the USB. - Apple Silicon (M-series): press and hold the power button until Startup Options appears → select the USB.
- T2/Secure Boot: if blocked, open Startup Security Utility in Recovery and allow booting from external media for this install session.
- Power: keep the Mac connected to power during install/upgrade.
⚙️ How to Use (Reinstall / Upgrade)
- Boot to the USB (see steps above for Intel vs. Apple Silicon).
- Select Install macOS and follow the prompts (language, disk, terms).
- To keep data, choose your system volume without erasing (if supported). For a clean slate, see next section.
- Complete setup, connect Wi-Fi if asked, and let the installer finish. The Mac may reboot several times.
Activation & Apple ID: Sign in after setup to restore iCloud, Messages, App Store purchases, etc.
🧽 Clean Install (Erase & Install)
- From the utilities screen, open Disk Utility.
- Select the internal drive (top level), then Erase → APFS (for modern macOS) → confirm.
- Quit Disk Utility → choose Install macOS → select the newly erased volume.
- After install, run Migration Assistant to restore from Time Machine or another Mac if desired.
Back up first: Erasing will permanently remove all files on the target disk.
🧭 Quick Fix Recipes
- macOS won’t boot: Boot USB → Disk Utility ▸ First Aid → reinstall if needed.

Startup disk not shown: On Apple Silicon, hold power until Startup Options; on Intel, use
Option ⌥. - Blocked by security: In Recovery, open Startup Security Utility → allow external boot → restart to USB.
- Erase & re-sell: Disk Utility → Erase (APFS) → Install macOS → set up as new or power off at Hello screen.
⚠️ Important Notes & Limits
- This USB provides installer/recovery tools; it is not a software license.
- Some Macs may require Internet for firmware updates or installer validation.
- If the disk is FileVault-encrypted, you’ll need the password to unlock before reinstall or erase.
- Very old Macs may be limited to certain macOS versions supported by their hardware.
