♻️ Give Your Old PC a Second Life

Instead of throwing away “slow” or “broken” computers, this USB helps you repair, clean up, and reuse them.

Why This Matters

  • Many “dead” PCs just need a boot repair, cleanup, or fresh drive.
  • Reusing hardware reduces electronic waste and saves money.
  • Perfect for refurbishing office PCs, family laptops, or shop builds.

How This USB Helps

  • Fix boot issues so the machine starts again.
  • Clean malware and junk so old hardware feels usable again.
  • Clone to a new SSD/HDD to speed up older systems.
  • Recover important files before deciding what to do with the PC.

Use it to:

  • Refurbish and reuse PCs at home or in a small business.
  • Prepare machines for donation (after wiping or reinstalling as needed).
  • Keep a “rescue stick” on hand instead of replacing hardware right away.
🔧 Customizable USB (Optional)

For IT shops, refurbishers, and training labs, this USB may be customizable within technical and licensing limits. Examples of what may be possible:

  • Adding or removing certain open-source repair or utility tools.
  • Preloading additional Windows utilities commonly used in your workflow.

To see what’s possible and how customization works, read our guide:

Custom options may require extra time or cost. Some tools cannot be customized due to licensing or technical restrictions.

🧩 Windows installer can’t see your SSD (Intel RST / VMD) — Fix

What this means: Your PC boots from USB correctly, but some newer laptops (HP/Dell/Lenovo/ASUS) use Intel RST / VMD. During Windows install/recovery, Windows Setup may require a storage driver before it can detect the internal SSD/NVMe drive.

Common symptoms

  • Windows installer loads files then returns back to the menu
  • Custom install shows No drives found or asks for a driver
  • Repair Command Prompt opens at X:\ (USB environment)

Step 1 — Quick BIOS check (recommended)

  1. Enter BIOS (HP often F10; boot menu often F9).
  2. Set Boot Mode: UEFI and (if needed) Disable Secure Boot temporarily.
  3. If you see Intel Optane / RST / VMD / RAID, disable it or switch to AHCI (if available), then reboot.

Note: Some models do not allow disabling RST/VMD — that’s normal. Use the driver method below.

Step 2 — Download the correct storage driver for your exact PC model

On your manufacturer’s support page, enter your model, select your Windows version, then look under Storage for:
Intel Rapid Storage Technology (RST) or Intel VMD driver.

Tip: If you don’t see the storage driver for the newest OS option, try selecting an older Windows 10 option on the driver page.

Step 3 — Save the driver on the SAME USB

  1. Download the driver and extract it (don’t leave it as a single .exe/.zip only).
  2. Copy the extracted driver folder to your TechStoreOn USB.
  3. Recommended location: place it at the root level of the USB for easy browsing.
  4. You can also place it inside PC Drivers Apps & Utilities\\DriverPack, but root level is easiest.

Step 4 — Load the driver during Windows Setup

  1. Boot the USB and start Windows Setup (Install / Repair flow).
  2. Choose Custom install (or proceed until you see the drive list / driver prompt).
  3. Click Load DriverBrowse → select the driver folder you copied on the USB.
  4. Click Next. Your internal SSD/NVMe drive should appear within seconds.
